Jennifer Lawrence Is Now “Dying to Come Back” for More X-Men Movies

Jennifer Lawrence Leaving X-Men

Almost exactly one year ago, Jennifer Lawrence said that X-Men: Apocalypse was going to be her last time playing Mystique in the comic book franchise. At the time we thought this could just as easily been a negotiating tactic for more money to reprise the character down the road, and a new statement from Lawrence seems to indicate that was the case all along.

In a recent interview, Jennifer Lawrence said, “I am dying to come back.” That’s a complete 180 from what the actress was thinking before, so either she has a new deal for future X-Men movies, or she’s just saying that for publicity’s sake. Find out more about the possibility of Jennifer Lawrence leaving X-Men behind after the jump.

Speaking with Empire, Jennifer Lawrence spoke very fondly of the X-Men franchise, “I love these movies, I love being in them. I love ensemble movies because it’s not on anyone’s shoulders.” However, while Lawrence may like the ensemble nature of the films, we’ve heard that she absolutely hates the time it takes to get into make-up to play Mystique. That process has gotten easier over the years thanks to a skintight body suit being used in place of full body prosthetics and paint, but it appears in X-Men: Apocalypse, at least from the trailers, they’ve opted for Mystique to appear in her human form more often than the natural blue skin and scales.

We might be reading into things too much, but maybe there’s something to be said about Lawrence’s choice of words. The actress says she’s “dying” to come back, and if she was so definitive about not returning to the franchise before, maybe Mystique is going to be killed and this new stance on reprising the role is in an effort to keep us off the scent of her potential demise. She’s definitely getting choked out by Apocalypse in the most recent trailer, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

Beyond that, Lawrence isn’t necessarily indicating that she will be back either. After all, Simon Kinberg has previously said that X-Men: Apocalypse would “complete the trilogy we began with First Class – to complete the stories of young Raven, young Hank, younger Charles and Erik.” And with a new team of young X-Men entering the mix, Mystique may not be so prominent anymore. We’ll have to wait and see what happens when the sequel hits theaters in a couple months on May 27.
