A couple of days ago I heard from singer Bev Kelly. If you're unfamiliar with Bev, dig my two-part interview with her from 2013 (here and here). In the 1950s, Bev was one of the hippest jazz vocalists in Chicago's bevy of hotel clubs and lounges. She recorded quite a few important albums, including several with pianist and vocalist Pat Moran. There also were two albums for Riverside—Love Locked Out (1959) and In Person (1960). Also notable was You Go to My Head with the Bob Graf Quartet (1959).
Bev just sent me her 2002 album, Portrait of Nine Dreams, with Jimmy Felber. I want you to hear the first track, From the Heart. But first, let's catch Bev's vocal scene in the 1950s:
Here's a sassy Long Ago and Far Away with Flip Nunez on piano in 1960...
Here's Bev singing Sunday Kind of Love with the Pat Moran Quartet in 1956...
Here's Bev singing I Wish I Knew with Pat Moran on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass and Gene Gammage on drums in 1957...
Here's Bev singing lead on I Should Care with the Pat Moran Quartet (vocal harmony by pianist Pat Moran, bassist John Doling and drummer Johnny Whited) in 1956...
And here's Bev in 2002, singing her own composition, From the Heart...
