This week in The Wall Street Journal,
I interviewed actress Priyanka Chopra, who starts in TV's Quantico, appears as the villain in the film Baywatch and has made more than 50 films in India (go here) [photo above of Priyanka Chopra courtesy of Wikipedia].

Larry Elgart.
Last week, I received the following email from trumpeter Randy Brecker on working with the Elgarts [photo above of Randy courtesy of Yamaha]...

"Hey Marc. Thanks for the nice article about Larry Elgart, a sweet man and a no-nonsense guy with a lead alto sound all his own. His was the first band I worked with upon arriving in New York 1966, and the Les and Larry Elgart album Girl Watchers was my first New York record date-arranged by Bobby Scott and produced by Teo Macero. Here's the title track where I play some fill's and quote Ornette Coleman's Ramblin' in the fade!...

"Playing with Larry brother, Les, wasn't as easy. I did a week with him at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City and, sadly, he only pretended to play. No one ever showed up to hear us. The high point of the evening was when the famed 'Diving Horse' jumped into the pool behind the ballroom. Les had the band boy watch for the big moment. The kid was instructed to run back into the room yelling, 'The horse jumped, the horse jumped!' And no matter what we were playing, we'd go into Ray Charles's What'd I Say to catch the people who came back in through the ballroom after watching the horse do his thing. I remember there were always great players in the band, among them Lew Tabackin, Arnie Lawrence, Jack Wilkins, Nat Pavone and more."

Rahsaan Roland Kirk. In 1967, director Dick Fontaine released Sound??, a 27-minute film with John Cage reading questions about sound intercut with Rahsaan Roland Kirk playing three saxophones at once at Ronnie Scott's jazz club in London. Cage and Kirk never met, but Fontaine felt both were raising similarly important issues with through provocative art. Making a compelling video.
Ever wonder how to create a professional-looking video? It's not enough to press the record button of your phone. There's interviewing, framing, editing and much more. To help out jazz artists (and anyone else who's interested), documentary filmmaker Bret Primack has started a new blog to offer advice and tips. The site is AskAFilmmaker.com (go here). Bret says he will be posting every other day on all aspects of filmmaking and web video. Congrats Bret and good luck! Here's Bret's promotional video [photo above courtesy of Bret Primack]...

Oddball album cover of the week.

Recently, I featured Liberace on the cover a 1960s album bearing the same title above. Not to be outdone, Mantovani also flashed his groovy side. Goodness, who bought this stuff? Perhaps the white turtleneck is the giveaway. Here's Mantovani's Leaving on a Jet Plane with an Acker Bilk-like clarinet and an accordion...

Looks like someone wisely (and humorously) sped up the thing to 45rpm...
