Recently, I was e-chatting with saxophonist Bill Kirchner about jazz flutists. I think it was just after my post on Harold McNair. At any rate, Bill noted that Joe Farrell (1937-1986) was one of the finest jazz flutists. Said Bill, "If there's a better sounding alto flute on a jazz record, I haven't heard it." [Photo above of Joe Farrell from the album Benson & Farrell.] To make his point, Bill sent along the following clips:
Here's Farrell with the Elvin Jones Quintet playing P.P. Phoenix from Jones's Genesis album in 1971...
Here's Farrell with Sam Most playing Hot House from Most's Flute Talk in 1969 (Most solos first, then Joe)...
Here's Farrell on alto flute and tenor sax with Elvin Jones playing A Time for Love from Jones's Merry Go Round in 1972...
Here's Farrell playing Bass Folk Song from his Moongerms album in 1972...
Here's Farrell on the title track from Chick Corea's Return to Forever album in 1972...
Here's Farrell soloing on flute, soprano sax and tenor sax on The Pharaoh, a Slide Hampton arrangement from Maynard Ferguson's album, Maynard '61, recorded in 1960...
Here's Farrell on a Thad Jones arrangement of his composition Don't Ever Leave Me from Jones's album with Mel Lewis, With the Jazz Orchestra, in 1966...
