Let's go one more round with Swedish arranger-conductor Harry Arnold. What I neglected to mention last time around in in my posts (here and here) is the name of his best album. I figured I'd save the best for last. Hands down, Arnold's finest album was Guest Book. Recorded in 1960 in Stockholm, the swinging album featured Arnold's Swedish Radio Studio Orchestra with superb arrangements by members of Arnold's band. But wait, here's the best part: The guest soloists were saxophonists Coleman Hawkins and Lucky Thompson, trumpeters Benny Bailey and Nat Adderley, and harmonica player Toots Thielemans. There isn't a bad note or measure on the entire album. It's a JazzWax five-star sleeper.
This blockbuster album is available only on vinyl, so here are five of the nine tracks:
Here's On Easy Street, by and featuring Lucky Thompson...
Here's That Old Black Magic, featuring Toots Thielemans...
Here's Image, by and featuring Benny Bailey...
Here's Sister Sadie, featuring Nat Addlerley...
And here's Tea for Two, featuring Coleman Hawkins...
A special thanks to David Langner.
