This week in The Wall Street Journal, I interviewed comedian Kevin Nealson for my "House Call" column (go here). Long-time Saturday Night Live fans will remember Kevin as Mr. Subliminal, the commentator who slips what he really wants and thinks in between normal conversation and news analysis. Here's a taste (go here). Kevin is hilarious on his new sitcom with Matt LeBlanc, CBS's Man With a Plan (go here). [Photo above courtesy of CBS.com]
Also in the WSJ, I interviewed Jennifer Beals (above, courtesy of Today.com) for my "Playlist" column (go here). The former Flashdance star chose K.C. and the Sunshine Band's Get Down Tonight and explained why she loved the song's intro when she was 12...
Original Dixieland Jass Band. Following my post on the 100th anniversary of the first jazz record, Robert McKeon sent along the following:
"Your post inspired me to search out some additional findings of the band on YouTube. Here's interesting historical film footage and the store of swing and jazz...
Also there is a great segment from TV's I’ve Got a Secret featuring two of the original members of the Original Dixieland Jass Band...
Art Pepper's wife, Laurie Pepper, is offering a range of recordings by the alto saxophonist here.
Ornette and Bix. Next Thursday and Friday (March 9 and 10), WKCR-FM in New York will be airing birthday tributes to the late free-jazz alto saxophonist Ornette Coleman on the first day followed by the cornetist Bix Beiderbecke on the second. You can listen on your computer from anywhere in the world by going here.
What the heck. Here's Candi Staton singing the Bee Gees' Nights on Broadway in the Times Square of Taxi Driver fame in 1977 (I was working there then at The New York Times on 43rd St.). The camera is shooting north. Signs for Camel (smoke used to come out of the mouth of the billboard model), Bond's Clothes and Castro Convertibles can be seen. We even see Candi sitting on what seems to be a '76 Cadillac DeVille on Broadway.
Oddball album cover of the week.
French comedian and gentleman farmer Raymond Devos driving a single-action pedal French harp. It's not as fast as the tractor he's pulling, but he doesn't have to worry about the radio.
